Learn about @dorn.bruce’s journey to becoming a #CanonExplorerOfLight: “As I reflect upon my journey as a photographer, and a Canon Explorer of Light, I realize that my path has always included teaching in some form or another. In my early years, I taught BFA-level Visual Communications full time and freelanced as a photographer when time allowed. More recently I’ve dedicated a lot of my flexible time to hosting photo retreats and doing one-on-one mentoring. Check out the Exploration of Photography Mentorship Program!

Yes, I love the generosity of teaching but I do it for selfish reasons, too — I strongly believe that the best way to truly understand a thing is through being challenged to teach it.

This B&W image comes from one of my favorite teaching venues — the seat of a safari car bouncing along a two-track in brightest Africa. I love hosting photo safaris and this symmetrical shot presented itself as we explored the vast caldera within Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania.

This lesson-of-the-moment related to the fact that photography is, to a great extent, a subtractive art form. The world presents us with a sea of visual chaos and one of our jobs is to distill all that craziness down into a single tasty shot of goodness. By adjusting our framing until we get rid of meaningless distractions, we effectively focus our viewers’ attention onto what matters. It took a trained eye to find these three calm convicts in a sea of striped silliness but we eventually found them!

Remember… Exploration begins with a clear vision. The more carefully you look, the more clearly you see!”
