Photo by #CanonExplorerOfLight @adam_jones_photo: “This Giant Hummingbird (Patagona gigas) is the largest hummingbird species in the world. This large hummer was filmed with an EOS R5 and RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM lens as it approached a favorite perch at about 8000 ft. altitude in the Andes mountains. The EOS R5 and lens in combination with eye tracking provided consistently spot-on AF of this rather small bird in flight. This hummingbird has a wingspan of 8.5 inches and a length of 9 inches, large compared to most hummingbirds. Hummingbirds are very territorial and aggressive to one another: several much smaller hummingbirds repeatedly chased and harassed this big guy whenever he graced us with an appearance. The constant harassment from other species meant we had to react very quickly when the bird suddenly appeared.

I have “eye-tracking AF” programmed to the AF On button on the back of my camera and have “normal” AF set on the front shutter button. I can instantly switch between the two modes as situations require. These settings provide the best of both worlds and keep my thumb free to move the Joystick or LCD touchscreen when not using eye-tracking. A fast shutter speed in sunlight easily freezes the bird’s fast-moving wings.”
