After sunset, summer heat cools, daytime hikers disappear and I hiked alone on a quiet chilly night. Reaching a hilltop, I set up to take photographs of some boulders that I previously scouted to use as the foreground elements. Just then, headlamps beam over the hill as I hear people chatting. I was surprised by the hikers at night but delighted to meet an astronomer viewing the stars with his family. They were friendly so I asked them to pose. I position them as silhouettes to the night sky. I exclaim, ‘stay still’ and they do. I did some light painting on them but I prefer the silhouettes. I later sent them prints to thank them. I photographed the boulders alone before their arrival – however, my preference is with them included. I like the human element, standing beneath the vast starry sky, with a sense of awe, against the Milky Way! I selected my favorite wide-angle lens for stars as points of light, the EF 24mm f/1.4L II USM. Here it allows the foreground subjects to have tighter coverage in the frame than with wider lenses. I set the shutter speed to 20 seconds and ISO to 1600 to get a good exposure. I am excited to share this image, this month on the cover of @outdoorphotomag with the feature article.”
