@bobanddawn_inthewild’s journey to becoming a #CanonExplorerOfLight: “Dawn and I embrace the saying ‘Be First, Be Bold, or Be Forgotten.’ We strive to find ways to push the boundaries of our photographs while still keeping true to our brand of timeless, classic moments captured for a lifetime. We are often asked, can I photograph a wedding with you? I’ll do anything, carry your bags, set up lights, anything. We came up with a creative approach to this question, Davis Love Story, Real Wedding Workshops, where 15 photographers work alongside us during a real wedding. These weddings are three days of real-world experience.

Jenni & Steven’s rehearsal party was at a classic movie theater in Charleston, South Carolina.

I thought to myself, if there’s a red carpet, there has to be the paparazzi! I had to figure out how can I have all the attending photographers flash fire at the same time? The light bulb went off inside my head, wireless flash! It was 2013, & I used the Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT with built-in radio transmission. At the time, I was the only one using the 600s at the workshop. But, the 600s are backward compatible, using optical, line-of-sight, wireless communication. I knew I could create the photograph I had in mind & before the guests arrived, I explained the vision to the group. I turned the power off on all the cameras, set the Canon Speedlites to receiver mode, all in Optical channel 4, group C, manual flash 1/16th power. I put my Speedlite 600EX-RT to sender, Optical, channel 4, sent the instructions to the remote Speedlites in group C to 1/16th power. The other Speedlites had SU4 mode, an optical receiver that any flash can trigger them to fire. ‘Bam,’ the test shots worked! The guests began to arrive; we hyped up the energy; cat called the guests, ‘who’s your designer, what are you wearing?’ The idea was a huge success and such a big hit, most guests walked the red carpet twice.

This has taught me to embrace technology, read the manual, and never limit my imagination. I remind myself constantly to be green and growing.”
