Whether you’re capturing wildlife or athletes, a long lens can help you get closer to the action — and it can also be used artistically to help compress the background and to amplify mood elements like morning mist, dust or colorful sunrise colors.

For these two images, I used Canon’s new RF400mm F2.8 L IS USM lens paired with the RF 1.4X extender to capture our climber coiling the rope. The extender creates a 560mm telephoto lens length with a minimum aperture of f/4.0. I found the combination tack sharp and incredibly quick to autofocus with the EOS R5 camera. I am excited to continue shooting with this high-end lens and extender, as the possibilities are endless!”
