I love to teach and I’ve been mentoring a young photo pal named @sarahonanie on and off for a couple of years. Sara is a member of the Hopi Indian tribe and lives in northern Arizona. Monument Valley, Grand Falls, Antelope Canyon, and the Grand Canyon are all right in her backyard. Is it any surprise that she loves nature and landscape photography?
When Sara recently asked me to shoot some 8th grade graduation pictures for her, I figured it was a good time to make a lesson out of it and introduce her to a series of environmental portrait techniques. This moonlit image of Sara under White Mesa Arch created by mixing nocturnal photography with light painting.
Once I had finalized my composition and locked down my tripod, I placed Sara in the foreground, just a few meters in front of my lens. With my EF 11-24mm F4L zoom lens set to 11mm, I manually focused a little beyond Sara to help let depth-of-field bring the background into focus.
With Sara steadily holding her pose at the beginning of the exposure, I painted her figure with a wee bit of illumination from a handheld battery-powered LED photo light. When experience and testing told me that she’d had enough illumination, I chased her out of the frame. This short moment of artificial illumination – about 1 second in duration – mixed with a longer moonlight exposure of the background – ultimately 16 seconds – resulted in the spirit-like transparency we sought. It took more than a few tries to get the best-looking mix of exposures, to be sure, but we didn’t give up experimenting until we loved the results. I learn something new each time I try this fun light-painting technique. Sara’s parents loved the results!
