[CC] 20 Hours on Myanmar’s Bagan Sleeper Train 🇲🇲 | 61UP Bagan Express | Yangon ~ Bagan

Hello everyone. Today, I will be traveling from Yangon to Bagan by train in an upper-class sleeper compartment. Enjoying the beautiful scenery and the rhythm of the train, and experiencing the beauty of Myanmar, we will visit Bagan for two days. Let’s go together! Good afternoon. I’m taking the circular train to downtown. 3:05 PM The Bagan train will depart at 4 PM. So, I got an hour left to grab my stuff This train doesn’t have a dining car, So, I need to buy bento for dinner and all my essentials before that. Huhhhhh! What is the bento??? Look like they’re all sold out. I arrived too late. 🥲🥲 Anyway, I’m heading to Yangon Central Railway Station. Since I bought the ticket 3 days in advance, I don’t need to buy ticket now. I’m excited to ride the train. 3:40 PM Arrived at Yangon Central Railway Station. It’s a DIY sand pipe with Dalian locomotive DF.2064. This is our upper-class sleeper carriage. BNUEZ 12685 This time, it’s with a Myitnge-made carriage. I tried to buy a 2-person compartment, but the tickets were sold out, so I bought a whole 4-person compartment. My wallet is crying. 5 minutes until the train departs. So, let’s look at today’s route. It will depart from Yangon Central Railway Station on Friday at 4:15 PM and arrive at Bagan Station at 12 PM the next day. It will depart from Bagan on Tuesday evening. We will have 2 days to explore Bagan. The train fare is 24,000 Kyats for upper-class and 31,000 Kyats for upper-class sleeper. It will be a 20-hour journey covering over 620 kilometers. The train has departed. Goodbye, Yangon! Currently, the Yangon-Bagan train is the only one overnight express with a sleeper coach in Myanmar. We are crossing the Bahkara Gorge. We will soon pass through Kyimyindine Station. Kyimyindine Station. Now that we’ve passed Kyimyindine Station, let’s check out the train carriages. Our compartment is a 4-person sleeper. It’s a 4-berth sleeper setup, 2 on top and 2 on the bottom. There will be pillows for sleeping at night. Soft and squishy. The space is comfortable enough to lie down. It’s more spacious than regular seats. There will be curtains for sun protection. I don’t see any charging outlets. I guess it’s because these are not the newer BNUEZ 1292X carriages. The upper berth. It’s also as spacious as the lower berth. What about sitting up? It’s a bit snug, but it should be fine. This is an upper-class carriage with a 2+2 seating arrangement. These carriages were manufactured by Daewoo in Korea in 1990. Back then, they were red theme carriages. Every seat also has small armrest tables. There are cup holders for drinks, and also footrests. It also has a fan. Ah… I saw a new locomotive, DF.1270, and the Pyay mail train. This new locomotive was manufactured at the Naypyidaw factory. Man, this is one long train I think we’re getting a bit far from Yangon now. The scenery is gradually changing. Today, the weather is pleasant, I would say. Because it’s not raining too heavily like the previous days. This sleeper carriage has 4 four-person compartments and 2 two-person compartments. This time, let’s go check out the restroom. There are two restrooms in the sleeper carriage. One is a Western-style toilet. The other is a traditional squat toilet. Outside the restroom, there’s a sink for washing hands and a trash can. There’s plenty of water. Now that I’ve checked out the train carriages, I’m going back to my compartment. The train is traveling at a speed of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour. It’s raining! !!! It’s raining, so I’m shutting the window The glass window is quite heavy. Be careful when closing it, as you might pinch your hand. I later realized that instead of closing the glass window, you can just close the iron one outside. It’s lighter and more convenient. No more rain, but those clouds are still around. Time to change pillows for some 8K TV viewing The evening view from the train is the best. Finally, the sun’s gone down! Luckily, it’s not raining anymore. Arrived at Letpadan Station. Letpadan Station is the junction for the Tharawaddy railway line. The Tharawaddy train had already departed before the Bagan train arrived, so we didn’t meet. But, I caught the Pyay express train. Goodbye, Pyay Express! No more trains left to watch, as a railfan. It’s getting dark, so I’m gonna get ready for bed. The train attendants told me to lock up the compartment doors at night before sleeping. Okay, it’s done. Good night, everyone. See you in the morning. Huh! The train suddenly stopped. There’s a shop right by the station. Are water bottles the best-selling item? I saw people buying only water bottles. Some people are walking around outside. I’ll go down and check it out too. We are at Aunglan Station. I think they stop here for a while. Goodbye, little shop and Aunglan Station. The train is departing again, so I’m going back to sleep. I heard they sell breakfast at Taungdwingyi early in the morning. I can’t miss breakfast!!! I’ll set an alert on my phone and go back to sleep. This time, I’m really go to sleep. 5:00 AM Good morning. We’ve arrived at Taungdwingyi. Looks like a long stop here, probably for breakfast. I see they’ve got fried rice, milk, and coffee for sale I bought fried rice with a fried egg. It’s delicious But man, that fried chili is a little too spicy for me – maybe I just can’t handle heat. The hot milk’s really good too. I drank it so fast and totally forgot to record it. Don’t miss the fried rice and milk when you roll into Taungdwingyi, guys! Thank you for the delicious breakfast. We are departing from Taungdwingyi now. Goodbye! The weather is a bit chilly. Taungdwingyi Station is the junction for the railway lines to Magway and west of the Ayeyarwady River lines. What you’re seeing now is that junction. It seems like no trains have used that track in a while. Now, let’s wash our faces. Got plenty of water. I’ll start my morning with coffee. It was super windy and cold last night, probably ‘cause we were passing near the Ayeyarwady River between Pyay and Aunglan. Last night’s view was awesome, especially since you could see the river. The station master clearing the track. There’s nothing much else to do. Should I just keep watching the 8K TV??? or maybe I should go talk to some people? It’s getting kinda boring after a bit. Better go chat with some people. I’ll go to the upper-class carriage for a moment. I sat down in an empty seat. Why is the view better from here? 😭😭😭 Maybe I should’ve just bought an upper-class ticket, huh? I’m just saying, the upper-class carriage is pretty comfortable. And these seats can recline 135 degrees. We gonna enjoy the morning beauty from this spot. Since it’s the rainy season, the paddy fields are lush green. The sun is covered by clouds. I’ll go check out the front carriage. This locomotive is the 2000-horsepower DF.2064. It was manufactured by CRRC Dalian in China in 2008. With a Caterpillar 3516-B engine. MR Ma Ma (Mrs.) Back in the compartment. Since there’s nothing much else to do, I’ll just read a book. A book about Bagan, naturally, since that’s where we are. You might think I’m just chilling but nope, I’m actually reading with my shades on. 😝😝😝 The scenery outside the train changes every hour. Arrived at Natmauk Station. Natmauk is also a junction for the Pyawbwe and Magway railway lines. No trains running on that side right now. Oh? They are waving and saying goodbye to us. I waved back. I can see green mountains. It looks like we’re nearing Kyaukpadaung. Their potatoes chips are famous. Arrived at Kyaukpadaung Station. Got to buy potatoes chips. Just 2,000 Kyats for a bag of chips? That’s cheap! I’m starting to see palm trees. This is a sign that we are getting closer to Bagan. Since we’ll get to Bagan this afternoon, I’m just gonna drink some water and eat some boiled eggs. Eating boiled eggs while riding the train feels pretty good. Oh wow, It’s so good, guys. And please dispose of trash in the trash can. We are passing through the mountains. The train has stopped in the mountains. Don’t worry, it’s not a breakdown. It’s because there are Catch Sidings and the train needs to switch tracks. This is a Catch Siding. In Burmese, should I call it a “wrong track” or a “safety track”? It’s for emergency stops in case the train cannot slow down. I see them a lot before we get to Bagan. They are waving here too. I saw some passengers giving gifts back. Be careful when looking out the window. There might be tree branches. I can see Tu Yin Mountain in the distance. You can even see the pagodas on Tu Yin Mountain from the train. So, we’re almost at Bagan. I need to prepare to get off. Goodbye, little bed. We arrived 40 minutes earlier than the estimated time of 12 PM. We have officially arrived in Bagan! Thank you for the pleasant journey. Bagan Station. Now, let’s head to the Hostel. Yes, a Hostel. To save budget, I chose a hostel in Nyaung-U. Arrived at BaobaBed Hostel. I’ll check-in and go to my room. This is the room I’ll be staying in. It’s a 2-person cozy private room. Now, let’s have a room tour. There will be towels. Soft pillows and a comfortable mattress. Okay. And a reading lamp. TV. Mini bar. Bean bag chair. And a bathroom and toilet. Bathroom and toiletries. Body Wash and Shampoo. My favorite thing is that even for a hostel, it’s got a water heater! Okay. There’s also a chill area outside. Oh, there are bean bag chairs here too. I see it’s designed to get good sunlight. But I prefer the chill area view at BaobaBed Yangon. I noticed they had books and board games there too, good for chilling with mates. I’ll just play by myself then. So, who won? It was me, haha! They also have dorm rooms here for those traveling with friends. These are the shared bathrooms for the dormitory. It would be fun with a big group. And there’s a rooftop bar and swimming pool on the top floor. I’ll go there tonight. Now, I’ll rest for a bit and then go explore in the evening. I also noticed a dedicated spot for applying Thanaka. Thanaka is the best natural way to protect from the sun. Today, I’ll go to nearby places with an e-bike first. First, let’s go to the riverside area. What you see on the left are the city walls and moat. I’ve arrived at my first spot. Yes, it’s Shwe Kuncha Pagoda. Oh! I saw a little squirrel. Nice to see you, little squirrel. I heard that Shwe Kuncha Pagoda used to be a little-known pagoda with few visitors. It’s said to have become famous after a scene from a movie was filmed here. It’s one of the pagodas on the Ayeyarwady River bank with a beautiful view. I wonder what’s behind it? Ah… it’s better not to go down. It looks really high. Let’s continue to the next place. The next place is… Bupaya. It is a pagoda located on the bank of the Ayeyarwady River. The evening view of the Ayeyarwady River is absolutely stunning. What you see in the distance is Tant Kyi Taung. Bagan’s sunset is famous. That’s why I’m at Yinmana Hill, one of the viewpoints for watching the sunset. Huh… Huh!! Where’s the sun??? Since it’s the rainy season, the sun is hidden by clouds. Someone… please call the sun. PLEASE !!! From this side, you can see it raining in the distance. Anyway, the scenery of Bagan is beautiful regardless. Since I can’t see the sun, I’ll go back. One drink to refresh. Cheers! Good morning. It’s Day 1 in Bagan. We will visit Shwe Si Gone Pagoda, one of Bagan’s iconic places. It is one of the most prominent and earliest built pagodas among Bagan’s historical pagodas. This pagoda began construction during King Anawrahta’s reign and was completed during King Kyansittha’s reign. You can explore ancient artworks and architecture while walking around the pagoda grounds. The air in Bagan feels clean, fresh, and quiet. We will continue to visit the beautiful sights and historical places of Bagan. The next place is Pyathadar Gyi Temple. Along the way to the temple, you can see beautiful flamboyant flowers blooming. The sight of blooming flamboyant trees makes Bagan’s beauty even more captivating. Arrived at Pyathadar Gyi Temple. It is one of the largest pagodas in Bagan and is famous for its unique and beautiful stucco artistry. According to tradition, this great pagoda was built by King Kyaswa. I’ll read a book while experiencing the historical atmosphere. Actually, my mind is more focused on the lady talking on the phone behind me than on the book. Let’s have lunch. I had lunch at a local shop in the night market area. Thank you for the delicious meal. Then, I arrived at g&g for dessert. I honestly didn’t expect g&g to be in Bagan. Refreshing lime juice. I’m relaxing on a swing in front of the shop. Now that I’ve rested, let’s go to another place. Bagan Archaeological Museum. It is located south of the Gawdawpalin Temple, within the old Bagan city. Cameras are not allowed inside the museum, so I’ll show you through my photos. It’s open daily from 9 AM to 4:30 PM, except on Mondays and public holidays. Please bear with me for my bad photography. 😭 I bought postcards from the museum. Then, I’ll return to the hostel. It’s Day 2 in Bagan. This morning, we will visit Nget Pyit Taung Temple. The big bird at Nget Pyit Taung Temple is also famous. Hello. It is said that King Anawrahta had 899 cave temples dug and donated for the monks. I found a natural water cooler. The water is naturally cold. Thank you for the refreshing cold water. And then I see some local shops. I’ll try Mont Let Saung. Here’s Mont Let Saung with jaggery. It’s a traditional Burmese dessert that cools you down in hot weather. It’s not too sweet and tastes good. Let’s continue to Dhammayangyi Temple. The temple is so massive that you can see it clearly from afar. Dhammayangyi Temple is famous for its massive size and excellent brickwork. The bricks are laid so perfectly that they appear to be a single piece. Due to its excellent brickwork, the temple has withstood earthquakes and natural disasters. The temple’s interior floor plan features two parallel corridors. One of the traditional stories is that King Narathu built this temple to atone for his sins, including killing his father and brother, and executing one of his queens. He personally supervised the construction, and it’s said that if a needle could be inserted between bricks laid by a mason, that mason would be killed. Now, I’m at the Fried Snacks shop under the Tamarind tree for lunch. All kinds of fried snacks. It’s excellent with sour sauce and seasoned rice. I’ll watch the sunset on my last day in Bagan. Mount Ohnnein Hill is less crowded than the hill near Sulamani Temple. Wowwwww! Finally, I saw the sun. I get to see Bagan’s sunset before leaving. It’s breathtaking. It’s the last day in Bagan. I’ll take the train back to Yangon in the evening. What I like about BaobaBed Hostels is that they offer free-flow coffee and tea. As a coffee lover, I appreciate being able to drink it whenever I want, which is very convenient. To preserve good memories of Bagan, I plan to mail the Bagan souvenir postcards I bought at the museum back to my home via postal service. When these postcards sent from Bagan arrive back home, they will remind me of the memories of my Bagan trip. Now, I’m at Bagan Post Office. Even though sending postcards isn’t very common these days, it’s a great way to preserve memories of a trip for a long time. For domestic mail, you can send it with a 300 Kyats stamp. For international mail, it’s 1,000 Kyats. I found another g&g store opposite the post office. I’ll have lunch at g&g today. Yes, instant noodles. I’m not very hungry, so I’ll just have a light meal. Then, I’ll go to the market to buy souvenirs to take home. Arrived at Mani Sithu Market. While Browse the market, for souvenirs to take home, I only bought lahpet (fermented tea leaves) and fried rice crackers. Then I’ll go back to the hostel and check out. Thank you for the comfortable stay. Now, let’s go back to the station. Arrived back at Bagan Station. Charging stations are provided for charging phones. Our train carriage is approaching. And then the locomotive couples with the carriage. It’s the same DF.2064 locomotive as on the way there. It’s time to board the train. Luckily, I got a ticket for a 2-person compartment for the return journey. This is the 2-person compartment. 4:15 PM It departs right on time. Goodbye, Bagan! There’s nothing much to do, so it’s best to sleep. Just kidding. It’s too early to sleep. I’ll watch the scenery from the upper-class carriage. Ah… I saw Mount Popa for 0.2 seconds. Why didn’t I see it on the way there? The view of Mount Popa from the train is uniquely cool. I still want to go hiking on Mount Popa if I get the chance. The train feels faster than on the way there. The speed is over 50 kilometers per hour. The sun has set, so I’m going to prepare for bed. Good night, everyone. See you in the morning. Morning! When I woke up this morning, we were at Letpadan. I didn’t get to see it clearly on the way there because it was dark. It’s quite beautiful. We’ve crossed the Pyay road and passed Mawbi Station. We are getting closer to Yangon. We’re entering Yangon Central Railway Station. We arrived in Yangon earlier than the estimated time. We have returned to Yangon. Thank you to everyone involved for the smooth train journey. Thank you to everyone involved for the smooth train journey. Now, I’ll take the YBS to home. Thank you for watching till the end.
