Exploring The Asuka village, the origin of Japan in Nara prefecture, The kengoshizuka kofun Tumulus
The Kengoshizuka Tumulus, a large burial mound located in Asuka Village, Nara Prefecture, Japan, is believed to have been constructed in the latter half of the 7th century, during the Asuka period (592-710)—a time of significant cultural and political development in Japanese history.
This is the mausoleum of Empress Kogyoku, also known as Empress Saimei (594-661), who reigned twice as the 35th and 37th empress of Japan.
This three-tiered, reconstructed tomb stands approximately 5 meters tall and measures about 22 meters in length. It is a key archaeological site, yielding important artifacts from both the Asuka (592-710) and Kofun (approximately 300-600) periods.
Following archaeological excavation, the Asuka Municipal Government began preservation and reconstruction efforts in January 2018, reopening the site to the public on March 6, 2022.
Asuka Village, often called the “origin of Japan,” is a popular destination for tourists interested in Japanese history and culture. Visitors, both Japanese and foreign, frequently explore the village’s attractions by rental bicycle. Don’t miss the beautiful terraced rice fields!
