Osaka is Japan’s second largest port city, the capital of the Kansai region, and the centre of the Hanshin industrial zone. Osaka has a population of 8.8 million and an area of 213 square kilometres. Osaka Castle, built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1532 AD, is still the most famous castle in Japan. Osaka is also the hub of east-west transport in Japan. The main sightseeing areas in Osaka are Shin-Saikyo Bridge, Umeda, Namba, Tenpozan, Shinchi, and Tennoji.
Shinsai Bashi, with Midosuji at its centre, and the area stretching from east to west, together with Namba and Dotonbori, are known as ‘Minami’, the southern part of Osaka, and are the busiest commercial areas in Osaka. You can experience Osaka’s downtown atmosphere while enjoying the bustling streets, shopping and gourmet attractions. There are many attractive sightseeing spots, such as American Village, the birthplace of Osaka’s popularity, and Orange Street, which is lined with stylishly decorated shops.
Dotonbori is the centre of Osaka’s Minami Castle, commonly known as ‘Minami’, and is situated on the south side of the Dotonbori River. The heart of Dotonbori is at Ebisu Bridge on the Dotonbori River, which leads to the Shinsaibashi shopping street in the north, and the Namba shopping district in the south. The centre of Dotonbori is the Ebisu Bridge on the Dotonbori River. Along the Dotonbori River, there are many buildings and signboards with a strong commercial atmosphere.
Namba is one of Osaka’s most important shopping districts and the commercial centre of the southern part of the city. Centred around the Nankai train station, the area is home to large-scale shopping facilities such as Namba Parks, Takashimaya Department Store, Namba Castle, Namba Walk Underground Street and Namba Nannan Underground Street, as well as hotels and a large number of food and beverage facilities and entertainment venues.
New World,’ located in Osaka’s Minami Jokushimachi, refers to the area centred around “Tontenkaku,” the symbol of Osaka. The area around ‘Dotenkaku’ is surrounded by the Showa-style streets that have been passed down to the present day. Dense and somewhat chaotic streetscapes unique to Osaka, dazzling billboards, and dazzling neon lights flashing at night, visitors can feel the atmosphere of Osaka in the old days.
